We highly recommend de-sexing your pets as it helps to control unwanted pregnancies as well as providing health benefits for your pet. At Rutherglen Veterinary Clinic we provide de-sexing for dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and guinea pigs

De-sexing is usually done between 5-6 months of age depending on the breed, but can be done at any age later in life.

Spay (Females)

Females undergo a common veterinary procedure we refer to as a spay, medically known as an ovariohysterectomy, and involves the removal of both ovaries and the uterus. They will have a small incision in the mid belly area.

Health Benefits:

  • Eliminate the risk of pyometra (infection of the uterus) which is a surgical emergency.

  • Reduce the risk of mammary (breast) cancer and ovarian cancer. The earlier they are spayed the less the risk, especially if before their first cycle!

  • Living a longer and healthier life.

Other Benefits:

  • Stop periodic cycles and bleeding.

  • Prevent unwanted pregnancies which can be very costly for you.

  • Cheaper to register your pet with your local council if they’re de-sexed.

Castration (Males)

Males undergo a common veterinary procedure we refer to as castration, medically known as a orchidectomy, and involves the removal of both testicles. There will be a small skin incision just above the scrotal sac.

Health Benefits:

  • Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, the second most common cancer in intact dogs, and prostate disease.

  • Reduces the risk of prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and prostatitis (information of the prostate).

  • Reduces the risk of hormone-related diseases such as perinatal adenoma.

  • Living a longer and healthier life.

Other Benefits:

  • Removes sexual urges, which in turn usually decreases roaming behaviours.

  • Reduces certain types of aggression.

  • Less prone to wandering.

  • Cheaper to register your pet with your local council if they’re de-sexed.
